Bitwarden, 1Password, and LastPass are the three most-recommended consumer password managers in 2026. They sit at very different points on the open-source-vs-polish-vs-trust axis. After running all three for the past two years, the verdict is not even close.

Bitwarden

Open-source. Self-hostable. $10/year individual, $40/year family. Generous free tier. Trust earned through public code review. The right answer for most users in 2026.

1Password

Closed-source. Best UX in the category. $35.88/year individual, $71.88/year family. Travel Mode is genuinely innovative. Watchtower (breach detection) is excellent. Worth it if you value polish.

LastPass

Closed-source. The 2022 breach exposed customer vault data. Recovery has been slow and trust remains fragile. Hard to recommend in 2026 over the alternatives.

The decision

Bitwarden if you want open-source and the best price. 1Password if you want the best UX and Travel Mode. LastPass: avoid unless you are migrating away.

Wrapping up

For most users, Bitwarden is the right pick. The open-source model + self-hosting option + price all add up. 1Password if your threat model values polish over price. Avoid LastPass.
