How to Get Refunded for a Software Purchase Paid With Crypto

Crypto payments are irreversible by network design β€” the merchant cannot "chargeback" a Bitcoin transaction. But a refund still works the same way card refunds do: the merchant sends a new transaction back to you. Here is how to navigate that flow.

Step 1: Open the refund ticket within the window

Most discount marketplaces have 24h-14d refund windows. Open the ticket via the official channel (web form, Telegram, email). Include order ID, screenshot of the failure, and the original payment transaction hash.

Step 2: Provide the refund destination address

You will need to send the merchant a fresh receiving address from your wallet. Best practice: use a new address (not the same one you originally sent from), to limit address-reuse linkage on the public blockchain. The merchant returns the funds to that address.

Step 3: Exchange rate considerations

BTC moved from $50k to $45k between purchase and refund? Most marketplaces refund in either USD-equivalent (so you get less BTC than you sent β€” locked-in original USD amount) or 1:1 BTC (you get back exactly what you sent). Read the policy before you click "Confirm".

Step 4: Verify the refund arrived

Once the merchant says the refund is sent, look up the transaction on the corresponding block explorer. Confirm the amount matches, the destination is your address, and wait for sufficient confirmations (1-6 depending on amount).

Wrapping up

Crypto refunds work β€” they just require a touch more attention than card refunds. The irreversibility cuts both ways: you cannot demand a chargeback, but you also cannot have the original payment fraudulently reversed.
